Seeking an accomplished physician leader to serve as Chief of Surgery for a growing regional healthcare system in Southern Maine. This influential leadership role combines clinical practice with executive responsibilities, offering the opportunity to shape the strategic direction, quality outcomes, and operational performance of surgical services across an integrated healthcare organization.
Position Highlights:
- Serve as the physician leader for the Department of Surgery within a respected regional health system
- Dedicated leadership time (0.5 FTE) combined with continued clinical practice
- Partner with administrative leadership in a dyad model to drive departmental and organizational success
- Lead surgical service line strategy, growth initiatives, and operational excellence
- Directly oversee Section Chiefs and support physician engagement across surgical specialties
- Influence quality, patient safety, access, and performance initiatives throughout the department
- Collaborate with executive leadership on system-wide strategic planning and implementation
- Foster a culture of physician engagement, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Support physician recruitment, development, mentorship, and succession planning
- Drive innovation in care delivery, patient access, and utilization of technology and electronic medical records
- Work closely with nursing, administrative, and physician leaders to ensure high reliability and exceptional patient outcomes
- Develop and oversee operational and capital budget planning for surgical departments and service lines
- Monitor and improve performance related to quality, patient safety, access, and financial goals
- Promote alignment across multidisciplinary teams within a matrixed healthcare environment
- Lead initiatives that enhance patient-centered care and operational efficiency
- Support physician performance management and professional development
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, legal, and organizational standards
- Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among physicians, nurses, administrators, and support staff
- Participate in organizational strategic planning and implementation efforts
- Champion leadership development and succession planning for future physician leaders
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school
- Board Certification in a surgical specialty
- Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Maine
- Active medical staff membership and unrestricted clinical privileges
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical practice, patient safety, quality improvement, and physician leadership
- Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and complex healthcare organizations
- Understanding of healthcare operations, quality metrics, and physician engagement strategies
- Financial acumen related to budgeting and operational performance preferred
- Experience in physician leadership, medical directorship, or department leadership roles preferred
